Product Description

Paracetamol Tablets

PRESENTATION :
Each tablet contains Paracetamol BP equivalent to 500mg of Paracetamol.

ACTIONS :
Paracetamol has analgesic and antipyretic actions.

INDICATIONS :
Mild to moderate pain. For symptomatic relief of fever in children and adults. (Additional therapy to treat the cause of pain or fever should be instituted when necessary).

DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION :
Adults : 0.5-1g every 4-6 hrs to a maximum of 4g daily.
Children 6-12 years : 250-500mg; 1-5 years : 120-250mg; 3 months to 1 year : 60-120 mg; <3 months: As prescribed by the physician, 10mg/kg (5mg/kg if jaundiced). These doses may be repeated every 4-6 hrs. when necessary.





OVERDOSAGE :
Paracetamol in massive overdosage may cause damage to liver cells. Serious toxicity is rare following administration of the recommended dose. However, when taken in large amounts (>10g/day), heptic necrosis may result.
Clinical and laboratory evidence of hepatotoxicity may be delayed for up to a week. In adults and adolescents, liver cell damage has already been reported following ingestion of <10 g. Fatalities are infrequent, (3-4% in untreated cases) and have rarely been reported with overdose of <15g.
In children, an acute overdose of <150mg/kg has not been associated with hepatic toxicity. Early symptoms are gastrointestinal upsets (diarrhoea/loss of appetite, nausea, vomitting, stomach cramps and increased sweating).
Hepatotoxicity occurs 2-4 days later and there is pain, tenderness and swelling of upper abdominal area. Hepatic enzymes may become elevated and prothrombin time is prolonged within 12-48 hrs, but clinical symptoms may not be apparent for 1-6 days after ingestion.
CONTRAINDICATIONS :
Known hypersensitivity to paracetamol.
WARNNINGS:
Unless otherwise prescribed, children should not be given>4 doses/day.
PRECAUTIONS :
Paracetamol should be given with care to patients with impaired kidney or liver function.
SIDE EFFECTS :
Side effects are rare. Liver damage may occur during prolonged use or overdosage.
Rashes, blood disorders and acute pancreatitis may also occur.
INTERACTIONS :
Paracetamol should also be given with care to patients taking other drugs that affect the liver (eg. Heptic enzyme inducers, hepatotoxic drugs, anticoagulants) and those with alcohol dependence. Avoid use of alcohol if taking more than an occasional 1 or 2 doses because there is an increased risk of liver toxicity.
